Tehran school on Theory and Applications of Complex Networks

25-29 August 2018 (3-7 Shahrivar 1397),

Department of Physics, Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), Tehran, IRAN

Welcome to the website of “Tehran school on Theory and Applications of Complex Networks” .

Nowadays studying and understanding of dynamical processes on and of complex networks are among the hottest theoretical challenges. Recently “Network Science” has been attracting the attention of a large number of researchers across various disciplines including mathematics, physics, biology, climate, computer science, sociology, epidemiology, and others. Mainly due to its applicability in modeling the structure and dynamics of a wide variety of large-scale complex systems (both natural and man-made), ranging from genetic pathways and ecological networks to the WWW, peer-to-peer networks, blogs and online social networks, communication networks, the development of vaccination strategies and the prediction and control of spreading phenomena, etc. Most of these complex systems display substantial non-trivial topological features, with patterns of connection between their elements that are neither purely regular nor purely random. Such features include a heavy tail in the degree distribution, a high clustering coefficient, assortativity or disassortativity among vertices, community structure, hierarchical structure and more.  It has become clear that the properties such as stability, robustness, spreading and so on depend on the features of the underlying interaction networks.

The Tehran Summer School on "Theory and Applications of Complex Networks" offers multidisciplinary lecture series that combine theoretical methods from computer science, statistical physics, nonlinear dynamics, epidemiology, and social network theory, to study common problems in systems exhibiting a complex network structure. The school provides an excellent platform for intense discussion and exploration on the wide spectrum of applications too.

This school concentrates on:

  • Network inference
  • Morphogenesis of social, semantic and spatial networks
  • Introduction to network dynamics
  • Introduction to network epidemiology

Organizers

We encourage researchers with interest in the above areas to join the program. Postdocs and PhD students are especially welcome. Accommodation is available at SBU guesthouse inside the campus. More information can be found in the registration section.

Students should know the basics of programming and computational physics, and bring a laptop to work on the assignments.

Registration deadline: August 1st, 2018

This school is organized by SBU and PSI.
