مواد توپولوژیکی معینی را میتوان در آزمونهای آزمایشگاهی اثر دینامو بکار برد؛ اثری که تصور میشود باعث ایجاد میدانهای مغناطیسی در ستارهها و سیارات میشود.
سیارات و ستارهها قادرند میدانهای مغناطیسی ایجاد کنند که برای میلیاردها سال دوام میآورند. این میدانها بر اساس نظریهی دینامو، از جریانهای الکتریکی نشات میگیرند که توسط حرکت سیالاتِ چسبنده و رسانای الکتریکی در پوستهی خارجی ستاره یا سیاره ایجاد میشود. با این وجود این نظریه نمیتواند مشاهدات اخترفیزیکی را به شکل کامل توضیح دهد. بنابراین پژوهشگران این نظریه را در یک سری آزمایشهای کنترل شده مورد آزمون قرار دادهاند. اکنون ویکتور گالیتسکی (Victor Galitski) از دانشگاه مریلند در کالج پارک و همکارانش پیشنهاد کردهاند که اثر دینامو را میتوان در مجموعهمواد توپولوژیکی که اخیراً کشف شدهاند (معروف به فلزات ویل – Weyl) یافت. این مواد قادرند یک بستر آزمایشگاهی مهیا کنند که سادهتر از ابزارهای قبلی است و میتوان آن را طوری تنظیم کرد که شرایط حاکم بر مدل های اخترفیزیکی را همانندسازی کند.

گالیتسکی و همکارانش انتقال بار در فلزات ویل را مورد مطالعه قرار داده و نشان دادهاند که این فلزات میتوانند اثراتی همچون آشفتگی را به نمایش بگذارند که در سیالاتِ با گرانروی کم دیده میشود. آنها دریافتند که حرکت بار در این مواد با معادلاتی که در نظریهی دینامو بکار رفته قابل توجیهاند: معادلات ناویر-استوکس (Navier-Stokes) که مخصوص سیالات چسبنده است با معادلات ماکسول که در الکترومغناطیس بکار میرود، جفت میشوند. این تیم با محاسبهی عدد مغناطیسی رینولد که معیار بحرانی شایستگیِ دینامو (figure of merit) محسوب میشود، شرایطی را یافتهاند که تحت آن، اثر دینامو در یک فلز ویل ظهور میکند؛ عدد مغناطیسی رینولد پارامتری است که تعیین میکند چه زمانی ترکیببندی میدان مغناطیسی با حرکت حجمی تعیین میشود و چه زمانی با پخش. نتایج نشان میدهند که این عدد میتواند برای ایجاد یک میدان القاییِ دینامو به حد کافی بزرگ باشد تا بتوان آن را آشکارسازی کرد.
